"St. Mary’s Lighthouse, situated on the tidal St. Mary’s Island just north of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside, England, is a prominent historical and architectural landmark. Completed in 1898, the lighthouse was designed by Sir Thomas Matthews, the engineer-in-chief to the Trinity House Board, and constructed by John Miller of Tynemouth. It stands at 126 feet (approximately 38 meters) tall and was built using around 750,000 bricks, with its exterior rendered in cement. The lighthouse was first illuminated on August 31, 1898, using a kerosene lamp, and it remained operational until its decommissioning in 1984.

Today, the lighthouse and its adjacent keepers’ cottages are Grade II listed buildings, recognized for their architectural and historical significance . The site operates as a visitor center managed by North Tyneside Council, featuring a museum, café, and access to the lantern room via a 137-step spiral staircase. The surrounding area is designated as a nature reserve, offering opportunities to explore rock pools, clifftop grasslands, and observe local wildlife.”
